This genealogy of Sally DeForest, wife of Platt Benedict, is an excerpt from the transcription of a handwritten notebook I discovered in my grandmother’s papers. It is the work of two women, Agnes Caroline Wickham and her daughter, Harriott Benedict Wickham Barton (my grandmother), who separately researched and made entries in it over a period of seventy years. Agnes Wickham wrote roughly half of the entries in the notebook from 1909 to 1915. In 1915, she gave handwritten copies of her work to each of her five children: Eleanor, William, Lucy, David and Harriott. Harriott continued her mother’s work off and on for the next sixty years, adding entries as late as 1977.

I am so interested in your web site. My great grandmother was a Forest(DeForest). Her father was Ephrain P Forest who came to Texas in 1850 to Atascosa Co. He had 11 children. Hehad a grist mill and also was Post Master of Ditto, Tx. He came from LA and also from either Conn. or Maryland. Not sure which one. Ido not know who his father was. I have all the info on him from Children on down. I would love to hear from you.

Was it a common practice for men to marry women 18 to 20 years their senior as in Sarah and Platt’s case?
My 3G grandfather is Peter Jacob or Jacob Peter Deforrest who may have been one of the families moving after the wars from New York to Iowa. His son Clinton Deforrest was born in 1821, near Troy, New York; he married in Iowa about 1849 when my greatgrandmother Sarah Deforrest was born. Clinton and his entire family moved to California before or during 1860. The spelling varies in many records from Deforrest to DeForest to De Forrest and other spellings. My other New York family name is Eddy.

Thank you for your comments, Merna. I’m afraid I didn’t communicate well on this page. Platt and Sally married in 1795, but they were only two years apart in age. He was born in 1775 and she in 1777. However, men did often marry younger women in those days.
Your family information is interesting. The descendants of Isaac de Forest used various spellings.

Did you find a son named Elmon Luther DeForest in your research? I understand that there is a family bible somewhere that gives the first name as Elmon, but he went by Luther. He was born between 1790-1796 in either MA or NY, and his father was born in CT. He married Mary A. Cunningham; they later moved to Ontario, Canada and subsequently to Michigan.

I am looking for a Nelson de Forest , born 1849 , either in New York , VT. , or Hillsdale or Ransom Michigan. His wife was Lydiann, possibly Chesebrough or Chesebro of Alden N.Y. He lived in Canada at one time. He died in Michigan. I am looking for the name of Nelson’s mother and father. Nelson and Lydiann ‘s children were William Albert , Clarence , and Mary . There may have been more. He was a farmer. Nelson may have lived with the Nelson Smith family according to the 1860 census.

I have since found out that Nelson De Forest married Lydia Ann Brooks in 1870 in Michigan. His mother was Mary Smith De forest, daughter of Nelson Smith , I believe. I am still trying to find his father’s name.

My husband’s 2nd great-grandfather, Isaac DeForest, was married in Huron Co, in 1839 to Electa Cartwright. He was born in Rensselaer Co, NY in 1816. While Sally DeForest Benedict descends from Isaac DeForest via David of the Connecticut branch, my husband’s Isaac DeForest descended from his 4th great-grandfather Isaac DeForest via Philip of the Albany branch.

Yes there were other DeForrest family members. Mine is Walter DeForrest. Daughter Mary b. 1821 in NY, m. John Hunter. They are buried along with Walter in E Norwalk cemetery. Another daughter – Susan m. Milo Cartwright. Also buried near John and Mary. Walter left Albany (Ithink) for Farmington & Victory NY then on to Ohio. Can’t seem to connect Walter past Ohio. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, William B. De Forest , born 1831 in Canada ,was the son of Elmon Luther De Forest of Sanilac Michigan. Luther was born in Massachusetts, as was his wife Mary Cunningham. Luther’s father was born in Connecticut and was a descendent of Jesse De Forest, credited with founding the first colony in New Amsterdam.I can not find out who Luther’s parents were, but all American De Forests are descended from Jesse De Forest’s children, Rachel De Forest de la Montagne and Isaac De Forest.

I descend from daughter Mary who married John Hunter (my line). I have Walter b. 31 Mar 1787 –listed as Wouter DeForeest – Albany NY Dutch Reform Church. Parents David I. DeFreest (1758-1834) & Susannah Fonda (1762-1836) m. 25 Dec 1779 Albany Reformed Church. I have from family Walter’s wife was a Mary. I have wondered if she was a Reed as there was a Walter Reed Deforest about the right age to be their son. Walter lived with Mary and Milo and later with Mary and John. He buried in E Norwalk Cemetary with them and so are the Cartwrights.

There a large question on Mary’s last name since a new census popped up with it being White then the suspected Smith and the husband being listed as Elery but there is no current picture to confirm it as of yet. I am certain Nelson’s Mother was Mary Smith. I have a hand written family history written by my great aunt , Beatrice Valada De Forest, and she has the details of the Smith family. I have traced them to Ipswich England in 1570. I will add this info to my Ancestry family tree in the next few days. I do not believe Ellery De Forest to be correct as Nelson’s father. I have tried hard for almost three years to find any record, other than the death certificate, for a Ellery De Forest and i have found nothing. I believe someone made a mistake. This death certificate is also the only record I have seen that lists Nelson’s mother as Mary White… everything else says Smith. His father’s name may have sounded similar. I don’t think Ellery ever existed, unless that was his middle name.

My family tree includes Jesse De Forest via his daughter Rachel and Dr. Johannes de La Montagne. While on a family vacation in London this past summer, I registered as a reader at both the British Library and the Kew National Archives. The actual 1621 document and the Round Robin petition to King James are available to view (and photograph!) at the Kew Archives, and the journal from the voyage to Guiana is available at the British Library (no photos allowed). This was a real treat. I highly recommend it to anyone going to London. Check their websites before you go so you have what you need to register.

Christiana Deforest was actually the wife of William Deforest, son of Luther and Mary Deforest. So she was their daughter-in-law, married in 1963, St. Clair Shores, MI. My great great grandma was their daughter, Barbara Ellen Deforest, born in 1966 or 1968 who married William Maxwell. If there is any information on how William Deforest passed away and when, please let me know. Family talk is he died in a lumberjack accident before Barbara was born, or this may have been her mother, Christiana’s father. thank you

My notes show Nelson DeForest’s parents as Abraham DeForest Jr and Jane Chapman. Suggest you check Loyalist records and census records in Halton County, Ontario, Canada. Would love to see what more info anyone has on Luther DeForest and Mary Cunningham, specifically any info on their parents.

Following up on Luther DeForest – I have done extensive online reserach and queries and have yet to find a birth, death or marriage record for Luther. Based on the information I do have, I would narrow the search down to one of three paths:
Brothers:
1A. Mills DeForest 1763-1842 and Hannah Powers
1B. Elihu DeForest 1771-? and Phebe Birdseye
Reasoning: both moved to an area in Vermont where Luther’s wife Mary Cunningham likely lived.
Brothers:
2A. Samuel 1757-1795 and Eleanor Sterling 1758-?
2B. Eliud DeForest 1769-1850 and Deborah Isabel Hoyt 1769-1854
2C. Clark DeForest 1772-1818 and unknown spouse
Reasoning: they are brothers to Sally DeForest Benedict, who moved west about the same time as Luther and Mary.
Loyalist:
3. Abraham DeForest II 1767-1842 and Elizabeth Bowman 1769-1847
Reasoning: Luther and Mary lived in several areas that were well known Loyalist migration areas

So excited to see your post , Caroline. There were actually two Nelson DeForests born within 4 yrs. of each other, or so. The Nelson born in Canada was born in, I believe 1845, and was descended from Abraham , the Loyalist . I believe he married a Dora Camp, and then her sister when she died. My Nelson is a different fellow , and I believe he is a descendant of David DeForest of Stratford Connecticut and Martha Blagge. He was born in July 1849 in Hillsdale Michigan. His father is unknown. I think Sally DeForest Benedict was also a descendant of David and Martha DeForest. My Curtis and Welles ancestors followed the same migration pattern as the DeForests from New England . then to Ohio , and to Michigan . I thought Elmon Luther DForest was born about 1798? I can find no info about his birth , or his wife’s. Luther was in northern Michigan as early as the 1830’s. Mystery DeForests!

Michele, there are lots of unfortunate accidents with Luther and Mary’s records. We know Luther was born in Massachusetts but the courthouse burned down and destroyed records. Same for Michigan records around the time of his expected death. Luther’s father was born in Connecticut and his mother was born in Massachusetts. ow Vermont (some of Vermont was originally part of New Hampshire). Per the 1860 and 1870 census records Luther was born in 1784. “Pioneers from Massachusetts” publication lists his birth date as 1796. Various other census records give a birthdate of 1788 and 1790. Census records show their migration: 1820/Unadilla, Otsego County, New York; 1821/near Sacketts Harbor, Jefferson County, New York; 1824/Clinton Township, Lincoln County, Ontario; 1828/Clinton Township, Lincoln County, Ontario; 1831/Michigan; 1841/Oxford County, Ontario; 1850/Sanilac, Sanilac County, Michigan; Spring 1858/Niagara County, Ontario; 1860/Sanilac, Michigan (they are living with son Lyman and his family); 1870/Sanilac, Michigan; 1880/Sanilac, Michigan. He was still living in Sanilac in 1881, and that is the last record I can locate. Family oral history indicates that Luther lived to 102 or 104 years old. I have not yet seen any evidence that Luther’s first name is Elmon. Michigan’s 1890 and 1900 vital records were destoyed in a fire.
Mary A Cunningham’s birthdate is also a mystery, but I speculate that it was 1799 and that she was born in Orange County, Vermont. Mary was born in New Hampshire or Vermont – based on land transfers it is more likely that the records will show as Vermont. I suspect this because Cunninghams and DeForests converged in this area of Vermont at the beginning of its history, and there is at least one census record with Mary listed as a child with a close birthdate. Various census records list her birthdate as 1795, 1798, 1800 and 1808. Based on the Vermont census record, this would make James and Mary Cunningham her parents. This still needs confirmation, probably via a trip to Vermont.
There is quite a bit of available information about their children: Harrison 1821-1904, Elizabeth 1824-?, Lyman 1827-1895, Calvin Amos 1828-1880 (my direct ancestor) and William Burt 1831-1868. There is some oral history of a daughter named Plamena but I have not found any records to indicate this is correct.
Anyway, that is what I know so far. I am hoping that someone has a family bible with names inscribed, because this is most likely to be where we find the missing information. Do you have any other leads?

Thank you so much for all the information. I really have no idea what relationship Nelson has to Luther , but I feel strongly that there is a connection ,mainly because of the people that are looking at both of them on various genealogy sites. In searching for Nelson’s father obsessively for three years, all roads seem to travel between David of Stratford and Martha Blagge, and Luther and Mary. I also think there is a relationship between Nelson, Luther, and the family of David DeForest and his wife , Laura Temple. My father remembered meeting a young man at a family reunion when he was a child, who told him his name was A.B.C. DeForest , Arthur Burton Charles DeForest. My father’s name was Arthur also, so he never forgot that meeting. The young man was David DeForest’s grandson, son of David and Laura’s son Edward. David and Laura are buried at Bellevue Cemetery in Bellevue Michigan, which is within walking distance of my Aunt’s house. Five branches of my fathers family , on both his mother’s and his father’s side, are from either Wethersfield Conn. or Stratford Conn. Four of those branches are from Naezing England and sailed between 1632 and 1636.That’s pretty much all I am know or have guessed. My grandfather never spoke much about his family except to say that they were descended from the Deforest and De la Montaigne families, and had lived in Canada at some time.Several people on Ancestry say there is a bible with Luther’s name as Elmon Luther, but I haven’t been able to trace who has it. Thank you for the info. about the records being burned…… that makes sense and I was so curious about why there were no records for Luther or Mary. I have read that the British did a slash and burn across Conn. during the war of 1812. Were the records burned then? I’ll keep looking for a father for Nelson. I have a public family tree I am building on Ancestry and that might help me to learn more. I do, however know a lot about many , many branches of the DeForest family .

Hello fellow DeForest searchers – I propose the possibility that Isaac Meir DeForest (1758-1813) and Mary “Polly” Gregory (1760-1833) are the parents of Luther DeForest (est 1784-est 1886).
Reasoning – 1. historical records show that Isaac and Polly had 9 children, but the records only give the names of 7 of them. One of the “missing children” could be Luther. 2. Isaac and Polly moved west later in life. 3. At least one son (Grandison) and at least two of son Alonzo’s children moved to the same area of Michigan as Luther and Mary.
Your Input – do you have any research or anecdotal evidence to support or disprove this supposition? Caroline

I think your theory is very interesting . My Grandmother was a Curtis , and her ancestors were Benjamin DeForest and Mehitable Curtis . Benjamin and Isaac Meir were brothers I believe .

I Caroline, I have also been looking at your earlier suggestions for Luther’s father. I pretty much eliminated the Loyalist Abraham ….,. Then I came to Mills . Oral tradition in our family was that Dr. Lee DeForest was a cousin of some degree. I have felt for a long time that my Nelson might be the son of Abel Birdseye DeForest ‘s son . His name was Elson. I do not have an iota of proof. Abel Birdseye and Mills were brothers . I believe they also had a brother Lee, grandfather of Dr.Lee. If I am right , my Nelson , and Dr. Lee would be 1st cousins , and it would also explain the connection to Luther and Mary . It is also my favorite branch of the family ( Revolutionary Brothers ) , so it may all be wishful thinking ! Another brother Samuel, married a Mary Curtis . Scrape that ! I messed up my Abels and Lees again. Mills, Samuel, Eluid, Gideon, and Abel, were the brothers known as the Rev.brothers. Abel Birdseye and Lee were both sons of Gideon .That would make Nelson and Dr. Lee both great grandsons of Gideon if I am right about Elson . I think I have confused myself !

I think Abel DeForest, son of Joseph and Susanna Mills , is Luther’s father. He was born in Connecticut , but several of his children were born in Massachusetts. He lived his later years in Unadillia New York , where Luther supposedly died . Abel’s wife was Elizabeth Rogers , and she and Luther are buried in the Rogers Hollow Cemetery in Unadilla. There is both a Luther and a Lyman buried there also . Abel’s son Nehemiah later lived in Michigan for a while with his son.

I’m trying to find information on Cyril DeForest born June 1901. He is my great grandfather, have not been able to find any records of death. Ship manifest records indicated that he was born in Mystic/Montville Conn. I called both places an Montiville had records for Cyril DeFausset. Not sure if that is just a different variation of the spelling of DeForest or not. He had a son in 1927 Donald and Don was giving up and Cyril moved on. My comment is for Merna cherry. It seems we are both related form Clinton DeForest who settled in Susanville, Ca. He also came across the plains with General Fremont and hunted with Kit Carson. Would appreciate any more info about the deforest family. fmurphy20@yahoo.com

My mother was Betty Ann Forrest died in 1991. Her father was (John D. Forrest) 1912-1939 murdered in Texas. His Father was (Henry Levie Forrest) 1893-1945. His father(John Forrest) 1870-1947. His father (Edmond Levi Forrest) 1832-1907. His father (Ephrain P Forrest) born on Jun. 22, 1796 Connecticut, USA he had 11 children.

Hello! I just found this site and am delighted. My paternal grandmother was Dorothy Pearl DeForest, dau. of Walter DeForest and Grace Haines, from Wisconsin/Minnesota. I have tracked the DeForests as best as able to David (1669) who married Martha Blagge (1669). My sources are not primary nor confirmed and that is what I hope to gain herein. I am also having trouble definitively giving Mary A. Cunningham (Eamon Luther DeForest’s wife) her parentage, as the Cunningham name in Colonial America were numerous. Any help to further the Cunningham connection would be very much appreciated as well. I am very new to ancestry work, and truly began this to find my “LEARY” heritage, which is my paternity. I have been very excited to uncover the myriad threads for my grandmother DeForest Leary.

I am descended from Samuel DeForest the Revolutionary War hero. I know he served with great bravery at the Battle of Stony Point but I know very little else about his life or his service. Can anyone tell me where to find information about his war record and/or his life before and after the war? With thanks in advance, Tim Coy Savannah, Georgia

Samuel DeForest is mentioned in an online history of the 5th Connecticut Regiment (http://www.5cr.org/index_files/5cr_history.htm). I would think that the source of that document “Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution—Compiled by Authority of the General Assembly under the direction of the Adjutants General,” would provide more information.

RE: Luther DeForest (1784-1886) and Micajah Drown (1794-1872)
Luther’s son Calvin married Micajah’s daughter Hannah
Last night I found one page of a family history document that told of Mormons coming to Sanilac County around 1853. At the end of the page it notes that DeForest, Drown and Cooper families were the head of the Mormon church in Michigan. So far I can’t find any other evidence of this statement, nor have I been able to locate the rest of the document. Has anybody else found anything along these lines?

I am very interested in your findings, Caroline. My paternal line is from the DeForests’ and there is so much confusion! However, I would also imagine the Mormon historical centers would have accurate information on this if the DeForests were indeed part of church leadership. I have yet been unable to corroborate any absolute information for so many of the DeForest family, that I somehow am skeptical of this being wholly accurate after all. Hey everyone! my name is Bobbi Jane (Deforest) Scranton. I am the daughter of Lawrence Neil DeForest and the granddaughter of Clinton Charles DeForest from Grand rapids Michigan.
